Plan to reshape armed forces for the future

Defense Minister  Nikos Dendias is set to introduce a significant overhaul of the nation’s military structure, aiming for greater efficiency and modernization across all branches of the Hellenic Armed Forces. The detailed plan will be presented in Parliament on Wednesday, with an advance briefing given to members of the National Defense and Foreign Affairs Committee.

The new strategy focuses on optimizing the Army, Navy and Air Force to meet current operational needs more effectively. Key changes include the dissolution of at least six understaffed infantry battalions within the Army, reallocating personnel to units with a targeted staffing level of 70%. This restructuring aims to move away from maintaining military installations purely for local economic support, a long-standing practice.

Dendias’ reforms will also address underutilized military bases. The Defense Ministry plans to close several facilities, consolidating resources to improve efficiency. Notably, 132 military camps are expected to be shut down by 2030 as part of a long-term optimization plan.

In the Air Force, the focus will shift to maintaining three primary types of fighter aircraft: F-16s, Rafales, and the future addition of F-35s. The older Mirage 2000-5 jets will be phased out, while F-16 Block 50 models will be upgraded to the advanced Viper variant. Additionally, the Air Force will acquire six new Rafale jets, reinforcing its aerial capabilities.

The Navy’s fleet will also see changes, with the introduction of four new FDI frigates to replace older S-class vessels. The plan also includes future acquisitions of corvettes, possibly through the European Union’s EPC program, to enhance Greece’s maritime defense.

A critical aspect of the new structure is the implementation of a comprehensive three-tier air defense system, covering the entirety of Greek airspace from Evros to Crete. This system aims to ensure complete national airspace protection and enhance overall military readiness.
